New York State by car
New York State is an ideal place to tour by car. Follow in the footsteps of many a celebrity and fashionista during the summer and head for the exclusive seaside resorts of Martha's Vineyard or Cape Cod. Both are located on the east coast of New England, just two-to-three hours' drive from New York City, and offer a wealth of opportunities for whale watching, relaxing on the beach and of course, celebrity-spotting. For a bit of historical celebrity, try the local JFK Museum near Hyannis Point.
What to do in New York State
Boston and Cambridge are within easy reach and are home to ivy-league universities such as Harvard and MIT. Only 220 miles from New York by car, both are well worth a visit for their refined architecture and leafy squares. You can also visit the bar made famous in the sitcom 'Cheers', along with the well-established botanical gardens.
New York Road Trip
Travelling northwards into Upstate New York, you will find rolling hills and stunning countryside. Albany is a town worth a stopover, not just for its well-known Egg building, an architectural wonder, but also for its wonderful stately homes and historic mansions such as Cherry Hill or the Schuyler Mansion. It also has several museums and art galleries hosting artwork and artefacts from around the world.
To the northeast are the wonderful lake districts around Saratoga Springs, Queensbury and Plattsburg, all easily reached via Route 87. Lake George is full of fun outdoor activities for the whole family, including steamboat rides and swimming or sunbathing on Million Dollar beach.
